Celebrating Over 40 Years of Craftsmanship in Vilcabamba
Introduction to the 23 de Junio Autonomous Women’s Association
For more than 42 years, six dedicated women from the parish of San Pedro de Vilcabamba, located in the Canton Loja, have passionately worked on creating beautiful articles using recycled materials. They belong to the “23 de Junio” Autonomous Women’s Association, the only group in the province focused solely on this sustainable craft. Established in 1982, the association originally started with 20 members, but now only six women continue its legacy: Lidia Camacho, Luz Michay, Magdalena Mosquera, Elvia Toledo, and Carmen Ramón.
The Journey of Creation
Elvia María Toledo, a devoted member of the association, shared how this enterprise came to life. It all began when a foreigner invited them to Tumbaco, Quito, where they learned the process of making recycled paper. “We decided to put this teaching into practice, even without the right equipment,” Elvia explained. Years later, the women continue to work with the same method, producing their items entirely by hand.
Crafting Unique Products
The process of crafting begins with collecting paper, followed by liquefying it. They integrate natural fibers sourced from banana tree trunks, then quickly press and dry the mixture. Elvia notes, “Our products include double books, mini books, albums, diaries, bags, boxes, and cards for all special occasions.” Recently, their items have been displayed in two local stores. The parish government has also pledged support by providing marketing spaces and technical equipment, ensuring their commitment to enhancing the quality and reach of these sustainable products.
