Empowering Women Through Recycled Crafts in Vilcabamba
Origins of the 23 de Junio Association
For over 42 years, an inspiring group of six women from the parish of San Pedro de Vilcabamba has been the heart and soul of the autonomous association “23 de junio.” This remarkable organization, founded in 1982, is the only one in Loja Canton dedicated to crafting beautiful items from recycled materials. The initiative originally started with 20 women, but now only six remain: Lidia Camacho, Luz Michay, Magdalena Mosquera, Elvia Toledo, and Carmen Ramón.
Crafting Artisanal Products from Recycled Materials
The story began when these women were invited to Tumbaco, Quito, by a foreigner to learn about recycled paper production. Elvia María Toledo recalls, “We decided to put this teaching into practice, even though we did not have the equipment to process it.” Despite challenges, including a lack of resources, they have continued their work, which remains 100% artisanal and by hand, using methods they have honed over the years.
Creating Unique Products for the Community
The process begins with collecting paper and blending it with natural fibers derived from banana or plantain trees. After pressing and drying, which can take up to a day depending on the sunlight, they produce a range of items. Members of the association showcase their creativity by crafting double books, mini books, albums, diaries, bags, boxes, and cards for special occasions, often using decorative elements gathered from local gardens.
The products are currently displayed in two local stores, with hopes of expanding into markets through support from the parish government. With plans for new, advanced equipment, their work can achieve higher quality and greater outreach. Interested customers can place orders by contacting Elvia María Toledo at: 99 093 6703.
